Auckland Zoo releases 3 new lesson plans with a new theme every Wednesday – one for ages 0-4, one for ages 5-11 and one for ages 12-17.

These easy to use resources incorporate cross-curricula support with activities relating to English, The Arts, Health and Physical Education, Learning Languages, Mathematics and Statistics, Science, Social Sciences and Technology, as well as relating back to key competencies.

Available for free download from Auckland Zoo.


This lesson plan teaches students all about Aotearoa/New Zealand and especially the amazing animals that are endemic to NZ.

Full of great links to videos and other resources that are sure to support your students on their journey of discovery!

Activities in this resource include:

  • TED Ed talk – ‘Why can’t some birds fly?
  • Venn diagram looking at the differences and similarities between some of NZs endemic birds.
  • Activity for matching whanaunga to either Ranginui or Papatūānuku
  • Drawing your family tree/tōku Whakapapa.
